LSSP and ICON 2008 Wrap Up!

For a week and a half life centered on all things CKI, first Large Scale Service Project, LSSP, then on to the International Convention, ICON, both were held in Denver, Colorado. While LSSP was probably the most tiring event ever done in CKI it was also one of the most rewarding. The first two days members worked with the Salvation Army doing various projects including unloading and sorting 14 huge trucks packed to the brim with everything imaginable people could donate, dismantling mattresses, our immediate past international president is capable of doing this in under 6 minutes, and worked at thrift stores around the Denver area cleaning and organizing their merchandise. Because our efforts, the Salvation Army was able to ship extra 15,000 garments to thrift stores, unload approximately $10,000 worth of merchandise and dismantle 200 mattresses saving $500 in dumping fees and generating $200 in recycling revenue. The third day we worked for the Denver Rescue Mission building carnival games and packing 1600 backpacks for underprivileged children who otherwise wouldn’t have new school supplies for the upcoming year. The day didn’t end there; we then moved a huge pile of sand to the other side of the complex so that the children who lived there would have a sandbox to play in. With 27 hours per person over the three days, we amassed a grand total of 4,644 hours of service.

ICON had plenty of exciting experiences. We had a service fair where each district showed off its favorite service projects, went to workshops about movies, our positions, and anything else you could hope to learn about CKI, held elections and discussed and voted on amendments that would affect CKI. The best part though was meeting people from around the country who shared the same passion for this organization and service; they made the event go from interesting to awesome. I met people from the Caribbean, Canada and nearly every state in the US. The House of Delegates was much more thrilling than I expected, every amendment was discussed and people were allowed to explain their positions, without there being too much arguing. While there we also elected the new International President, Kristin Reed of NY District and Vice President, Rico Torres of Pennsylvania District, as well as the Sub Regional Representatives.  I will leave you the same way our immediate past international president left us, with what we need to do as members to improve our organization. She says to simplify and focus on service, lead by inspiration, maximize service and fellowship, do not fear change, and use the talents of our members to better the organization.

Fall Retreat 2007 Wrap Up!

Circle K Members throughout the Texas-Oklahoma District were brought together for a weekend of incredible activities of leadership building, inclusiveness, and an opportunity to meet others within the district. October 26th – 28th was marked for this event at Camp Honey Creek.

Many Circle K members were given the opportunity to participate in activities from archery, to swimming, to hiking.  Other activities were in teams either building a float, given a theme, and having a great time using their creativity and a few raw materials. The last part of the event included a bon fire at night and members enjoying a time of relaxation eating “smores” and telling spooky stories.

I encourage everybody to come again next year and bring your friends for a weekend of entertainment. Our district focuses on the ability of bringing our chapters together and the service we perform for our communities while developing leadership qualities in all the members.

Governor's Corner

Greetings Texas-Oklahoma!

My name is John Cano and I am currently a sophomore studying history at The University of Texas at Austin.  To begin, I must say that I am incredibly humbled to serve as your governor this year. I am anticipating nothing less than a phenomenal year for this district and I feel that with my board and the entire Kiwanis Family behind us we can accomplish great things.

The 2008-2009 T-O District Slogan is Scaling up the K.  This means that we will ramp up the Service, Leadership, and Fellowship that we are known for.  We can do this by refocusing on our tenets, expanding our district, and reaching out and uniting with the Kiwanis Family like we have never done before.  The goal is to set our district on a path for increased service, growth, and fiscal stability.  Service and income can only come through growth, so it is of the utmost importance to establish new, stable chapters and to reactivate chapters that have gone by the wayside.  By increasing the number of members we have we can increase the amount of service we do in our communities.  I will challenge every member to really raise the bar in service so everyone will know of the great work that our organization does.  Join me as we break down barriers that hold us back from achieving true greatness!

Greetings CKI!

At this past International Convention in Denver, I was elected as your new International President. My past in the Kiwanis Family is a lengthy one stemming back to being a Builders Club Vice President, Key Club District Governor, and more recently I served this past year as the CKI International Representative to Sub-region F.

I am currently nineteen years old and a third year undergraduate student at the State University of New York at Potsdam majoring in Communication with minor studies in the French language. My favorite hobbies include cooking, movie nights with friends, and traveling.

Webster’s Dictionary defines excellence as “The state, quality, or condition of excelling; and superiority.” While campaigning for the office of International President in Denver I made a sincere promise to bring our organization’s focus on the future and center back to what makes us so excellent, service. This year’s International Board is ready to serve and offer new opportunities for the membership to expand their horizons in the areas of service, leadership, and fellowship. In the coming months the board will sit down to create this year’s goals, expectations, and blueprint for success. I know I speak on behalf of the entire International Board when I say we are excited to hear your ideas and your vision to where you would like to see this organization steered. Why? Because you are the members that make this organization so strong and you are the members who give selflessly to our tenets to make the world a better place.

The International Board will be meeting September 4-9, 2008 in Indianapolis, IN. Please contact your International Representative should you have questions, comments, or suggestions for this 2008-2009 year.

John F. Kennedy once said Excellence in any art or profession is attained only by hard and persistent work.” If you have any comments, questions or suggestions for the upcoming year, please do not hesitate to contact me.  My email is president@circlek.org and my AOL screen name is "KristenCKI”. I look forward to a year of hard and persistent work with a goal of excellence to benefit our members and I’m excited to get the ball rollin’ for a better CKI!
